“Accessing the Body Through the Brain”

Stress is an underlying component in all chronic illnesses, as well as neurodevelopmental conditions.

The stress response is controlled by something called our autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS has three branches: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and the enteric nervous system (ENS). The SNS is often referred to as the fight or flight response and the PNS is referred to as rest, digest, and repair response. The vagus nerve is part of the ENS and is the command center for the PNS. This is important because techniques can be used that effect the vagus nerve that will help get us into the PNS response.

When our SNS is in control, we are in survive mode.

When our PNS is in control, we are in thrive mode.

Here are a few potential causes of stress to our body:

Toxins from food, air and water

Inadequate sleep

Physical and psychological trauma

Sensory processing dysfunction

Perceived psychological stressors
