“Accessing the Brain Through the Body”

The way we move and take in information from the environment affects how our brain functions.

This includes participation in activities that create new neural patterns, helping to develop new habits and enhance occupational performance.

What are examples of occupational performance?

Much of what a person needs or wants to do throughout the day constitutes occupational performance - getting up and getting ready for the day, a young child engaged in play behaviors that are necessary to acquire developmental skills, participating in a leisure activity or hobby, a student participating in a classroom setting, a person socially interacting with his or her peers to maintain social relationships, preparing a meal for ones family, pet care... the list is endless.

This part of the approach is what many people would be familiar with if they have ever participated in traditional OT sessions.

For example, many children with developmental disabilities have poor muscle tone and coordination. Their targeted functional activities may include play that targets proprioception , trunk stability, and visual motor coordination.

Targeted functional activities for an individual who has an autoimmune disease may include fatigue management, developing a movement plan that does not increase cortisol levels or modifying a self-care task due to a physical or cognitive limitation.

Some of the functional activities that could be used in your individualized plan include:

Sensory motor techniques

Developmental movement

Condition specific movement and exercise plans

Condition specific self-care strategies


Multisensory learning strategies

When a child or individual first incorporates the approaches of nutrition and transforming stress, there is greater potential for healing. This will allow for improved brain and body function, enabling faster skill development during participation in the functional activities part of your plan.
